Overview. One of the world’s great cities, Kolkata or Calcutta as it used to be known, has been through many incarnations. From an obscure village on the banks of the Hooghly river, it evolved into the capital of Great Britains’s Indian Empire. Today, this vibrant City with it’s distinct imperial flavour is the capital of the communist state of West Bengal. The decision to shift the capital to New Delhi in 1911 and the urban decay of the 1960s diminished some of the city’s affluence, but never quenched its effervescence. The city of Joy is the first to have Metro in India and has benefitted in reducing the traffic on the roads.
Visit historic Synagogues, admire the magnificent Victoria Memorial, the glittering Jain temple, the architectural wonders of the British era, and take a walking tour of the neighborhood’s attractions, which includes the ghats and flower market.
